Seniors and Falling

Research has shown that elderly people fall frequently and are treated in hospitals for potentially serious injuries. This can be a result of the aging process, which can contribute to a loss of balance and muscle strength. There are methods that can be implemented which can help to prevent falling. These methods may include: removing worn rugs that may have frayed edges, installing grab bars in the toilet and shower area, and wearing shoes that can easily grip the floor. Additionally, if you have pets, it may be beneficial to have your cat or dog wear a bell around their collars. This may help you to easily pinpoint their location. It is helpful to perform gentle stretching techniques as often as possible which can aid in strengthening the muscles.   • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked

  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.
