Potential Complications of Flat Feet

Flat feet is a condition referring to the collapse or flattening of the foot’s arch. This condition may be present from birth or acquired throughout the course of your life. Flat feet may progress slowly over time, especially in active people, and may lead to potential complications such as shin splints, stress fractures, and bunions. Furthermore, flat feet can cause tibialis posterior tendinopathy, plantar fasciitis, Achilles heel injuries, and may make you more prone to injuries of the knee and hip. If you suspect that you or your child may have flat feet, it is suggested to consult with a podiatrist, who can diagnose and treat this condition and prevent future complications.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.

How Did I Get Blisters On My Feet?

Blisters may form on the feet as a result of the body’s reaction to defend the skin. They typically appear as fluid-filled sacs or bubbles where the feet experience the most friction, such as the ankles and toes. When the skin of the feet experience excess friction, blisters can form, often creating discomfort and sensitivity for those affected. To help relieve some of this discomfort and pain, it may be helpful to put a bandage over the blister, that way when shoes are worn, they are not rubbing up against the blister and creating even more friction. Blisters will typically drain on their own over time, so during this process it is suggested to keep the affected area clean and dry. For more information on how to prevent blisters from forming, please speak with a podiatrist.

Blisters may appear as a single bubble or in a cluster. They can cause a lot of pain and may be filled with pus, blood, or watery serum. If your feet are hurting, contact Imaze Marian Davis, DPM of Marian Davis, DPM, PA. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Foot Blisters

Foot blisters are often the result of friction. This happens due to the constant rubbing from shoes, which can lead to pain.

What Are Foot Blisters?

A foot blister is a small fluid-filled pocket that forms on the upper-most layer of the skin. Blisters are filled with clear fluid and can lead to blood drainage or pus if the area becomes infected.

Symptoms

(Blister symptoms may vary depending on what is causing them)

  • Bubble of skin filled with fluid
  • Redness
  • Moderate to severe pain
  • Itching

Prevention & Treatment

In order to prevent blisters, you should be sure to wear comfortable shoes with socks that cushion your feet and absorb sweat. Breaking a blister open may increase your chances of developing an infection. However, if your blister breaks, you should wash the area with soap and water immediately and then apply a bandage to the affected area. If your blisters cause severe pain it is important that you call your podiatrist right away.

When it comes to shopping for shoes with your child, there are a number of ways you can help ensure a comfortable fit. As far as choosing the correct shoe size, it is best that you are measuring your child’s feet frequently. You also want to make sure the shoes you are buying are beneficial to your child in particular. For example, if your child’s feet need arch support, it would be best to focus on shoes with that particular feature. With all shoes, it is important to pick ones that are breathable, durable, and flexible. Since children’s feet tend to get sweaty, finding a breathable material can encourage circulation for your child’s feet. Since the feet do swell, it is best to shop for shoes at the end of the day, that way your child’s feet are at their largest, and you can avoid picking footwear that is to tight for them. For more help on how to best purchase footwear for your child, please consult with a podiatrist.

It is important to find shoes that fit you properly in order to avoid a variety of different foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact Imaze Marian Davis, DPM from Marian Davis, DPM, PA. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

Shoes have many different functions. They cushion our body weight, protect our feet, and allow us to safely play sports. You should always make sure that the shoes you wear fit you properly in order to avoid injuries and deformities such as: bunions, corns, calluses, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, and more. It is important to note that although a certain pair of shoes might be a great fit for someone else, that doesn’t mean they will be a great fit for you. This is why you should always try on shoes before buying them to make sure they are worth the investment. Typically, shoes need to be replaced ever six months to one year of regular use.

Tips for Proper Shoe Fitting

  • Select a shoe that is shaped like your foot
  • Don’t buy shoes that fit too tight, expecting them to stretch to fit
  • Make sure there is enough space (3/8” to ½”) for your longest toe at the end of each shoe when you are standing up
  • Walk in the shoes to make sure they fit and feel right
  • Don’t select shoes by the size marked inside the shoe, but by how the shoe fits your foot

The shoes you buy should always feel as good as they look. Shoes that fit properly will last longer, feel better, and improve your way of life each day.

Sweaty Feet Can Be Common Among Babies

Sweating is the natural method to regulate body heat. Many people can become overheated as a result of exercising, having anxiety, and enduring hormonal changes. Additionally, genetic factors and existing medical conditions may play a significant role in having sweaty feet. This condition is known as plantar hyperhidrosis. When overheating occurs, the sweat glands are activated to restore the body to normal temperatures. Some children have feet that sweat for the majority of the day, and this may cause embarrassment if the shoes and socks are removed. If you notice your child has this condition, it is suggested that you consult with a podiatrist who can properly diagnose and treat it.

If you are suffering from hyperhidrosis contact Imaze Marian Davis, DPM of Marian Davis, DPM, PA. Our doctors can provide the care you need to attend to all of your foot and ankle needs.

Hyperhidrosis of the Feet

Hyperhidrosis is a rare disorder that can cause people to have excessive sweating of their feet. This can usually occur all on its own without rigorous activity involved. People who suffer from hyperhidrosis may also experience sweaty palms.

Although it is said that sweating is a healthy process meant to cool down the body temperature and to maintain a proper internal temperature, hyperhidrosis may prove to be a huge hindrance on a person’s everyday life.

Plantar hyperhidrosis is considered to be the main form of hyperhidrosis. Secondary hyperhidrosis can refer to sweating that occurs in areas other than the feet or hands and armpits. Often this may be a sign of it being related to another medical condition such as menopause, hyperthyroidism and even Parkinson’s disease.

In order to alleviate this condition, it is important to see your doctor so that they may prescribe the necessary medications so that you can begin to live a normal life again. If this is left untreated, it is said that it will persist throughout an individual’s life.

A last resort approach would be surgery, but it is best to speak with your doctor to find out what may be the best treatment for you.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our office located in Miami, FL . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.
