Understanding Different Types of Foot Pain

Foot pain can arise from many causes, and its location often reveals the problem. Pain in the heel may signal plantar fasciitis or a heel spur, while pain in the ball of the foot may result from metatarsalgia or a neuroma. Aching arches can stem from flat feet or overuse, and pain along the outer edge might indicate a stress fracture or tendon irritation. Toe pain can develop from bunions, hammertoes, or ingrown nails. Each type of pain may feel sharp, burning, throbbing, or dull, depending on the underlying condition. Wearing improper shoes, standing for long hours, or overtraining can make symptoms worse. If you are experiencing ongoing or severe foot pain that affects your mobility, it is suggested that you see a podiatrist for an accurate diagnosis, and a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Regaining Strength After an Ankle Sprain

An ankle sprain occurs when the ligaments that support the ankle stretch or tear, often from twisting or rolling the foot. This injury can cause pain, swelling, and limited movement, making daily activities difficult. As healing begins, gentle exercises such as building balance on the injured foot help restore stability and coordination. Scrunching a towel with your toes can improve flexibility and strengthen the supporting muscles. A podiatrist can assess the severity of the sprain, recommend targeted treatments, and guide your rehabilitation to prevent re-injury. If you are struggling to regain strength or stability after an ankle sprain, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist who can offer effective strengthening techniques.

Although ankle sprains are common, they aren’t always minor injuries. If you need your ankle injury looked at, contact Imaze Marian Davis, DPM from Marian Davis, DPM, PA. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains are the result of a tear in the ligaments within the ankle. These injuries may happen when you make a rapid shifting movement while your foot is planted. A less common way to sprain your ankle is when your ankle rolls inward while your foot turns outward.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Pain at the sight of the tear
  • Bruising/Swelling
  • Ankle area is tender to touch
  • In severe cases, may hear/feel something tear
  • Skin discoloration

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

In many cases, the RICE method (Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevate) is used to treat ankle sprains. However, you should see a podiatrist to see which treatment option would work best with your injury. In severe cases, surgery may be required.

It is important to ask your doctor about rehab options after you receive treatment for your injury. Stretching, strength training, and balance exercises may help the ankle heal while also preventing further injury.

What Is a Cuboid Stress Fracture?

A cuboid stress fracture is a rare overuse injury that affects the small cube-shaped bone on the outer side of the foot. It develops gradually from repetitive stress rather than a single traumatic event. Symptoms include persistent ankle or outer foot pain that worsens with weight bearing and physical activity. Runners, gymnasts, and basketball players are at higher risk due to repetitive impact and twisting motions. A podiatrist can diagnose this condition through imaging, recommend rest, protective footwear, or custom orthotics, and create a rehabilitation plan to promote bone healing and prevent recurrence. Do not ignore lingering foot pain. If this applies to you, it is strongly suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can accurately diagnose and treat such an injury.

Stress fractures occur when there is a tiny crack within a bone. To learn more, contact Imaze Marian Davis, DPM from Marian Davis, DPM, PA. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain free and on your feet.

How Are They Caused?

Stress fractures are the result of repetitive force being placed on the bone. Since the lower leg and feet often carry most of the body’s weight, stress fractures are likely to occur in these areas. If you rush into a new exercise, you are more likely to develop a stress fracture since you are starting too much, too soon.  Pain resulting from stress fractures may go unnoticed at first, however it may start to worsen over time.

Risk Factors

  • Gender – They are more commonly found in women compared to men.
  • Foot Problems – People with unusual arches in their feet are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Certain Sports – Dancers, gymnasts, tennis players, runners, and basketball players are more likely to develop stress fractures.
  • Lack of Nutrients – A lack of vitamin D and calcium may weaken the bones and make you more prone to stress fractures
  • Weak Bones – Osteoporosis can weaken the bones therefore resulting in stress fractures

Stress fractures do not always heal properly, so it is important that you seek help from a podiatrist if you suspect you may have one. Ignoring your stress fracture may cause it to worsen, and you may develop chronic pain as well as additional fractures.

How a Podiatrist Can Help With Gout

Gout is a form of arthritis caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in the joints, often affecting the big toe. It leads to sudden pain, redness, and swelling, making it difficult to walk or wear shoes comfortably. Common causes include a diet high in purines, alcohol consumption, obesity, and certain medical conditions. Risk factors ,including genetics, kidney disease, and high blood pressure, can increase susceptibility. A podiatrist can help by diagnosing the condition, managing pain, providing custom orthotics, and offering guidance on diet and lifestyle changes. If you have pain in your big toe, it is suggested that you schedule an appointment with  a podiatrist who can help you to manage this painful condition.

Gout is a painful condition that can be treated. If you are seeking treatment, contact Imaze Marian Davis, DPM from Marian Davis, DPM, PA. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Is Gout?

Gout is a form of arthritis that is characterized by sudden, severe attacks of pain, redness, and tenderness in the joints. The condition usually affects the joint at the base of the big toe. A gout attack can occur at any random time, such as the middle of the night while you are asleep.

Symptoms

  • Intense Joint Pain - Usually around the large joint of your big toe, and it most severe within the first four to twelve hours
  • Lingering Discomfort - Joint discomfort may last from a few days to a few weeks
  • Inflammation and Redness -Affected joints may become swollen, tender, warm and red
  • Limited Range of Motion - May experience a decrease in joint mobility

Risk Factors

  • Genetics - If family members have gout, you’re more likely to have it
  • Medications - Diuretic medications can raise uric acid levels
  • Gender/Age - Gout is more common in men until the age of 60. It is believed that estrogen protects women until that point
  • Diet - Eating red meat and shellfish increases your risk
  • Alcohol - Having more than two alcoholic drinks per day increases your risk
  • Obesity - Obese people are at a higher risk for gout

Prior to visiting your podiatrist to receive treatment for gout, there are a few things you should do beforehand. If you have gout you should write down your symptoms--including when they started and how often you experience them, important medical information you may have, and any questions you may have. Writing down these three things will help your podiatrist in assessing your specific situation so that he or she may provide the best route of treatment for you.
